More Stories Ahead

We’ve wrapped on an amazing sixth season of Dale Radio over at www.daleradio.com. The season finale episode goes up next week and features one our finest hours yet with Nikki Glaser, Jean Grae, Streeter Seidell, and Jessica Delfino. Thanks to everyone who came out, who appeared on the show, and generally made it possible for this business of obscure podcasting to continue! I’ll post more (as Dale) over on his site.

Over the summer, I’ll be keeping cool and telling some new stories as part of two great storytelling events. Very excited to be included in my third Soundtrack Series evening on Friday, July 18th. This one is going to be held at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens. I’m sharing a story inspired by the soundtrack to Dirty Dancing. I can guarantee that it will be dirty and there will dancing. So dirty.

And the on Weds, July 30th, I’ll be part of the tremendous How I Learned Series, hosted by Blaise Allysen Kearsley. This show will happen back in the old neighborhood at Union Hall. These are two of my favorite storytelling series and I can’t wait to share some chestnuts from the vault with you. Enjoy the humidity!!

Mundane Fest, Running Late, & Storytelling

Looks like I’m popping up in some unexpected places this summer. Even after all the podcast episodes that I have done over the years, I’ve only recently appeared on an episode as myself. If you want to listen to me talking about growing up and making my way to New York you can do so on comedian Chris Lamberth’s program, The Mundane Festival. He interviews a lot of great comedians in New York and it was an honor to be among them. (Hint: the bit with me starts about thirty minutes in. You can also hear how windy our apartment is.) Here’s the link.

But since I can’t ever stay away from Dale for too long, on Weds. May 28th I’ll be returning to my teal suit and glasses for a guest spot on the Running Late with Scott Rogowsky show. It’s at Littlefield in Brooklyn and the rest of the lineup is amazing. Steve Buscemi? Brooks Wheelan? Adam Resnick! Katie Nolan? Peter Rosenberg? This show has it all. And Dale. The greenroom is going to be hopping. Tickets, if any are left, are available via this link.

And then on June 5th, I’ll be getting back to plain ole James and telling a short story about my youth as part of Split Personality, a story telling series hosted by JiJi Lee. That show is 7pm at Over the Eight Bar, in Williamsburg. Links for that event are here.

Tom Shillue’s A Funny Story

Folks, I’m super excited to be telling a story as part of the terrific series run by comedian and storyteller, Tom Shillue. Hope you can come out and see me talk about some of my awkward brushes with fame or some weird interaction with the opposite sex on April 24th at Brooklyn Brewery. Tickets are $10 and that gets you a beer and lots of funny stories. Here’s the link for tickets. Get em while you can! Beer + funny = good times.

In Dale Radio news, we’ll be back with another amazing live show, at 8pm on Weds, May 14th at the PIT Dale’s guests will be Dave Hill, Giulia Rozzi, Laura Prangley, and DJ Rekha. Tickets available via this link.

SF Sketchfest Roundup & More

2014 has started with a busy couple of months. Dale Radio projects have been taking up most of my time, with super fun shows coast to coast, from the NYC Podfest to the SF Sketchfest. It was wonderful to be back in San Francisco and to perform for such a big and friendly crowd. I even made a brief cameo in a Killing My Lobster sketch and they let me keep my clothes on!

Back in NY, we’ve found a new venue for Dale. And while I miss being able to walk to the show, we have settled into a nice groove, while still keeping the show in a basement, in our new digs at The PIT in NYC. All the info and audio for the most recent season is available at www.daleradio.com.

In non-Dale news, I was also thrilled that my Columbia House story was featured on the Best of the Soundtrack Series compilation episode, which is still available online. On the homefront, V has discovered the intrinsic comedy in the word dookie, and she likes to punctuate a good dookie joke with an enthusiastic “CLASSIC!” The kid’s got a bright future.

L Magazine Profile of Dale Radio

Once a month, Dale Radio makes a little magic at Union Hall. The podcast, taped in front of a live audience, features the musicians, comedians, performers, and filmmakers that make Brooklyn so dynamic and intriguing. Dale Seever, the host, is an intriguing character himself. Read More

Twelve Secrets of a Lonely Teen

I was recently asked to contribute a story to the Soundtrack Series, in New York City. Run by the incomparable Dana Rossi, the series invites people to share a personal history informed by music. This summer she asked folks to focus on a song from a particular time period, and I chose Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start the Fire, from 1989. In thinking about how I came to own that song, I realized that I had ordered it through Columbia House. And so, I told a story in which I set up how completely out of it musically I was growing up, and revealed my entire 12 cd lineup from the mail-order house. Here’s an excerpt that highlights the list. It’s a really awful list. Click over and give a listen, then try not judge.

Dale Radio Returns LIVE 9/16

Friends. Strangers. Development Directors at non-profit art spaces around the country. If you are in New York on Monday, September 16, 2013 – and enjoy drinking and/or laughing and/or both, please consider making it out to see the Season 6 premiere of my humble podcast effort, Dale Radio. Tickets can be bought in advance or at the door for the price of just five dollars. In exchange, I will deliver one of the finest hours of your life – thanks to the amazing guests and people involved in pulling this off. After five years of doing the show, we’ll still be in a basement, but we will be in one of the best basements in all of Brooklyn, Park Slope’s Union Hall. They have a full bar, and a couch, and bathrooms that are not scary. Please bring a friend, tell a friend, let’s blow this out of the water and show em that Dale has some fans out there. If you’ve never been to a show – now is the time!! We’ll be there the third Monday of every month through December – and beyond if y’all can make it out. I have a few other items to tell you about – and will be posting again soon. Thanks for the support everyone! Onward!

Ask an Expert

Thanks to my good friend and world traveler, Joy Yoon, my advice for what to do in LA has been included in her new book, The Best Things to Do In Los Angeles! I’m even listed as an expert. Which I am. So you should get the book and flip right to pages 164 & 165 and do exactly as I say! So exciting!

I’m on TV…sort of

So much has been happening of late over on the other side of the internet! This summer we’re shooting some very special episodes of the smash-hit webseries, Spending Time With…Dale! You can watch all of the first cycle – featuring Jamie Shupak, Cory McAbee, Eleanor Friedberger, Chris Gethard, and Sasheer Zamata doing things with Dale over at youtube.com/daleradio. If you check it out, subscribe so you can be alerted to new episodes. Podcasts and posts continue over at www.daleradio.com. And I’m excited to be performing once again as myself in the July edition of the acclaimed story-telling event, The Soundtrack Series. That’s happening on August 1, downstairs at Le Poisson Rouge. Then get ready for an amazing fall as Dale Radio Live crosses the Gowanus for a new season at Union Hall. Every third Monday at 8pm. More info on the Dale site. Gah! And so much more…20th high school reunion, trip to Venice, V’s graduation…too much for one post! Hope to see you at a live event coming up!

Along the Waterfront

We moved. It’s hard to be those additional blocks away from the Gowanus, but hopefully we’ll still get some foul gusts come summer. Dale continues his march of excellence and thanks to all who supported the web series. We’ll shoot a few more episodes this month then we should have something out to you soon. If you’re in Brooklyn and want to come see a show – we’re doing them monthly, usually on the third Thursday, at the terrific Film Biz Recycling. A great organization that treats Dale right – and makes for a fun environment to be in. The Foundation also is maintaining its course – we just announced a new partnership in Portland called, The Precipice Fund, joining the ranks of the other Warhol-supported Regional Regranting efforts in other cities. So you know…things are happening. Even if I only update once a year.
