Summer Stock

First of all, I rowed down the Gowanus and lived to podcast about it. In fact if you want to track the journey led by the fantastic Marie Lorenz, just visit her site. Warning – there is a bloated rat in the photo set, (and I’m not talking about the fella in the high socks!). It ended up being a really amazing season, so my deepest thanks to everyone who helped make it possible. Dale-enthusiasts will be happy to know that I’m working on a bunch of video stuff and hatching a plan for the Dale Radio live shows, which begin again in September. Every now and then, I do have to step out of Dale’s shadow, so I’m pleased to say that I’ll be appearing as myself on the July 26th edition of the wonderful Soundtrack Series. Come on out if you’re in NYC and hear a tale of my early adventures with the opposite sex…and rollerskating.

Dale Radio Live!

Love stand-up but hate sketch comedy? Dig the interactive combo of video and live commentary, but hate it when stand-ups single out audience members for ridicule? In LOL, our comedy column, Kyle McGovern, an aspiring stand-up himself, explores regular comedy shows around Brooklyn and reports back on what brand of hilarity to expect when you settle into your seat.Read More

Spring Along the Gowanus

With so much Dale activity happening over at DaleRadio.com, I’ve been slow to post anything here. If you want to come out and see Dale – the Super Fun Superfund Variety Show is a great way to get him in a small dose. Saturday, April 21! And later that week is another taping of the show at Film Biz Recycling. I’ll actually be appearing as myself this summer, but more details on that soon. Don’t want to spoil the excitement just yet.
If you’d like to hear from Strindberg and Helium on twitter, the way to do it is to follow @miseryyyy. Just settling in for a nice mosquito season over here by the canal. The air conditioner probably goes on tomorrow.

Dale Radio Live! NBC4 LA

Dale Seever brings his magical podcast to the Hammer for a live recording session on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Many an aspiring chitchatter has reached for podcasting glory in the last few years. The locations they hail from are as plentiful as stars on a map; the topics they cover could fill a phone book. (We wouldn’t be surprised if there’s actually a podcast devoted strictly to phone books, in fact.)

But few podcasters win that prized cult following, and fewer still can attract the offbeat and interesting guests that inspire a prized cult following. Dale Seever – aka James Bewley- is that cult-following-inspiring podcaster. His lively shows can cover subjects like “holiday nog” and “quality ’70s menswear” and “time travel” and “fame” and “burritos,” just to cherry-pick from his site. In short? Whatever the gamut is, Dale Seever laughs at it and runs, with mirth, past its borders.

Now he’s bringing his Dale Radio Live! show to the Hammer Museum on Thursday, Jan. 19. There will be guests, including Mary Lou Metzger of “Lawrence Welk” fame. And “onstage mixology.” And tunes from the UCLA Jazz Ensemble. Gamut? Prepare to tested, and then broken.

It’s a free show, so people who like free shows, podcasts, sassy banter, and facial hair will surely be in attendance. Mr. Seever is quite the hirsute gentleman, a plus in our books.

Time is 7 p.m. Park beneath the Hammer for three bucks after 6 p.m.

Inspired, podcasters? Want, someday, to put on your own show at a big museum? Beards, onstage mixology, and burrito talk are all obviously key. But so is having a really solid show.

An Alter Ego Comes to Life

Clark Kent has a famous alter ego with the power of flight, superhuman strength and X-ray vision. James Bewley’s alter ego, Dale, simply has a propensity for cheap teal business suits and whiskey in all of its forms. Read More

Dale Takes LA!

Folks, happy to announce that the erstwhile, Mr. Seever, my daring alter ego – is headed back to Los Angeles, the land of his lost years. Dale will host a free, one-night only, live taping of the popular podcast, Dale Radio at the Hammer Museum, on Thursday, January 19, at 7pm. Parking available under the Museum for a modest sum. Really hope you can make it or spread the word! Guests include Marc Horowitz, Daniel Lee, and the amazing Mary Lou Metzger, star of the Lawrence Welk Show!! A dream come true! For more on the event, you can visit the Museum’s site, www.hammer.ucla.edu.

Summer Days, Drifting Away

Summer highlights: A week in Brigantine watching Vera run for the “wa-wa” (the water, not the hoagie specialists); celebrating my dad’s 65th birthday party; celebrating my uncle’s 60th birthday party; a fantastic time in San Francisco for the Warhol Convening; being named an Emerging Leader of New York Arts Fellow; and launching the first-ever Dale Radio Superfund Pledge Drive on Kickstarter. Can’t wait for Fall to get here so I can stop sweating.

The Future of Radio Is Me

People discover Dale in the most peculiar ways. I recently sat down with Kim Chakanetsa a graduate student at Columbia University, who sent me a lovely note asking for an interview about the future of radio. In her research she had stumbled across Dale Radio and got sucked into the allure of micro-broadcasting from the foul banks of the Gowanus. She put together this piece for her class and was kind enough to send me a copy. I thought I’d post here so that I can close my eyes, imagine a light drizzle, and pretend that I’m actually on the BBC.

Hope you enjoy this short interview:

What Have I Done For You Lately?

Is Dale the future of radio? I dunno, but an upcoming interview may provide some insights! He’s sure been busy over at DaleRadio.com – and in person, steaming up the windows of the World Famous Brooklyn Lyceum. Thanks to the entire crew over there for making Dale Radio Live! such a success on Feb. 12.

In other Bewley-news, the book for Shary Boyle’s amazing show, now touring through Canada, is available for purchase. In it you can read my humble essay about Shary’s performance work. (One of the two fantastic covers is pictured.)

Top of the Gugg

It was a strange and wonderful honor to have Strindberg and Helium named one of the Top 25 Creative Videos in the first ever, Guggenheim/YouTube Play Biennial. You can even watch some of the festivities from the awards night on the YouTube Play channel. (For Bewl seekers, I’m in the first section – then I mostly am walking up and down the ramps trying to not to slip.)It was a lot of time spent in the basement of the world renowned museum, but we all were given giant gold-painted ceramic bricks and got to stand behind Michael Showalter. My hearty congratulations to all the winners, and especially to my dear friends, the dynamic engine of Strindberg and Helium, Erin and Eun-Ha.
