DEEP NIGHT BACK TO BACK COAST TO COAST SHOWS

DID YOU MISS DALE?! He missed you. And he felt the bomb cyclone and the earthquakes and he said – you know what, my audience needs a little touch of the Deep Night! Convinced you were summoning him to both the East and West Coasts, Dale’s planned two big shows for you to enjoy.

First up- SF SKETCHFEST! This marks our fifth time going to the most esteemed of sketch comedy festivals (sixth if you count an appearance with Killing My Lobster in the early aughts). On Saturday, January 13th at the reasonable comedy hour of 5:30pm – Dale will bring an all new show full of wonderful guests and hot sounds and lots of talk about ancient Egyptian curses. Join him as he welcomes all-time favorite Michelle Buteau; new fave Becky Braunstein; and the witches behind the cult radio sensation, Astral Projection Radio Hour. Plus music from Bay Area superstars, Yea-Ming and The Rumours! It’s happening at the cozy winter hangout, Piano Fight, in the city’s glorious Tenderloin District. Find out how tender things can be when Deep Night with Dale returns to SF Sketchfest in this FREE show! But you should still RSVP – cause that’s a good thing to do. And you can do it here: https://sfsketchfest2018.sched.com/event/CzHL.

THEN NEW YORK CITY – I CAN’T QUIT YOU!! Time to sneak back through the portal and the back alleyways of Laguardia for another show at the world famous Slipper Room on the Lower East Side. Along with the fantastic Cornelius Loy on theremin, Dale will welcome Dulce Sloan, Yedoye Travis, and the groovy sounds of Friends Who Folk (Rachel Wenitsky & Ned Riseley). Tickets are available now and would it be a good idea to pick some up? IT WOULD! This show will also feature some surprises! Don’t miss out. Weds, January 17th at 8pm/doors at 7pm. 167 Orchard Street. The turtlenecks are being pressed as we speak for these two exceptional events. Tickets for NY show here: https://www.slipperroom.com/event/1615030-guest-event-deep-night-dale-new-york/.

This year is dark and taking forever! Luckily Dale’s making use of this extra time and the flattering low lighting of fall to give you one more live broadcast from the Deep Night! Yes, set your portals to Lower East Side, cause on Weds, November 15 at 8pm, Dale returns to the world famous Slipper Room for another amazing live show full of regrets, revelations, and rising stars.

Join Dale as he welcomes his guests actor and musician Lola Kirke (Mozart in the Jungle, Mistress America); musician Kiley Lotz (Petal); comedian Wanjiko Eke (Cinderblock Festival, Witch Hunt); and comedian/twitter superstar Sarah Lazarus (Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, Brooklyn Comedy Festival). DEEP NIGHT SEASON 10 BEGINS 9/20!

Friends. Dale’s looking forward to seeing you at The Slipper Room on Weds, September 20th at 8pm for the live Season 10 premiere of the Deep Night podcast. Dale’s got a terrific lineup of guests – most of whom are still covered in body glitter after attending the recent Emmy Awards. We’re finding comedy in dark places with Matt Rogers (Las Culturistas), Rae Sanni (The President Show), Kristen Bartlett (SNL), and Melinda Taub (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee). For tickets and more info visit:
http://www.slipperroom.com/event/1519641-guest-event-deep-night-dale-new-york/.

All of these guests are helping to define and contextualize and offer relief from our current political moment. Meanwhile – Dale is fresh off his stint as spiritual consultant to the catering staff at some of NY’s hottest fashion events for New York Fashion Week. His turtleneck is pressed, his owlmulet gleaming, and his demons are mostly in check. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate the tenth season of the show and to learn more about essential oils from a licensed regional distributor.

And after this live event tune into the podcast for more great conversations. But really – come to the event. Dale promises a good time.

SUMMER TWISTS AND TURNS

An end of summer update. Not the most important thing in the world, but there we go.

Visited the art world grand tour, seeing so much/too much work in Venice, Kassel, and Munster. Didn’t make it to Athens (sorry, Athens) for the extension of Documenta there, but got lots of Greek/German history on this trip. Also got to enjoy the entirely not glamorous German approach to temporary accommodations, with a stay that has to rank among the worst in my nine years of business travel. The lack of air conditioning was one thing, but not like a major thing. But let’s talk about the bed, for a minute. A kind of inverted thing, where the feet ended up higher than your head. The first night I gave up half way through the night and just slept on the floor on a wadded up blanket. The second night, I opened the window which had the affect of filling my room with multiple hungry mosquitoes, but I did manage to flip the mattress over and though itchy, I did get some rest. The third night, I rolled over and my entire elbow went right through the sheet. Tore a giant hole. I covered it up and left a 2 euro tip in the morning.

Documenta was solid. Venice was a less so. Munster was “get me off this effing bike”. The thing is, you end up seeing some strong work – but you also end up seeing some stuff that’s just not worth the pain of a bike seat and riding forty minutes in the wrong direction up a one way street. The food everywhere – including the Frankfurt train station – was great. Even that horrible hotel had a good meat and fresh pastries vibe going on in the breakfast buffet.

Venice. Always in my heart. It may be overrun, and overdone, but gosh darn it, I love that place. Ciao! Prego! Allora. I can’t stop saying it. It’s annoying. I know. Still…

Then we did the moving. Which…a month later, we’re still unpacking boxes. A few blocks away, but a much improved situation. Still…so.many. boxes.

Then Ohio, where this photo was taken at the world famous Kings Island. I learned once again that I am not as asset on water rides if you want to stay dry.

Recalling that trip, I also can’t help thinking about Charlottesville, I place I’ve been only briefly. So many of those young men who participated in the violence there were from or spent time in, Ohio. Many were from the places we go to every summer. Kids who no doubt rode the same log flume, ate the same weird blue ice cream, kids who sat at a Skyline Chili and ate oyster crackers to bide the time before the coneys arrived. How they went wrong, well, I dunno. Somewhere ignorance took root and hate grew from there. I’ve seen it fully formed. Stood next to it. Cringed at Confederate flags and Nazi paraphernalia in car show fields and flea market stalls. Laughed awkwardly at comments or jokes, just to get on to the next thing and not deal with it. But I’m going to try harder and be better. Let’s take down all the mammy salt and pepper shakers we have. Let’s not let an Uncle slip a little racism into conversation over the mashed potatoes. And by all means, let’s protest and continue to evaluate the worth of public monuments to a lost war.

I was also in Lexington and Louisville where that particular debate is active and working its way through the community. I second the idea to relocate all these old monuments to some empty gas station lot in the desert. Or melt them down and make new ones in honor of more lasting values, like justice and equality. Acknowledge the past, reconcile with it, or abandon it, and move forward. Meanwhile, I’m going to focus on putting more love out there.

And reading grant proposals. And unpacking.

Parents Arts Night at Jalopy Featuring Dale!

Dale’s by no means the star of the show at the upcoming Parents Arts Night at Jalopy in Brooklyn. But he might be a reason to go. I know I love it, because it’s a chance to perform alongside some talented parents while also raising a little scratch for the fine educational programs at PS29. The school has been terrific and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t super excited to do this show. Just seeing the hidden talents of the other parents is gift enough. It would be great to see you as well. Some of you may know that I do voice overs, and recently I walked in for a paired audition and who was there? Another parent! We have the same agent. Which I guess is not so weird, but it felt pretty weird. And our paired audition in a tiny tiny recording box was also pretty effing weird. But, there it is, people have talents. So why not come out, enjoy some music, comedy, and whatever else people have going on when not chasing kids around the playground, or sitting quietly in the hall during parent teacher conferences. (You can also just make a donation if you prefer to do that. I won’t tell or post about it ever.)

CONJURING ANOTHER DEEP NIGHT IN NYC 3/22

Oh, friends and fiends. This is the time of year of awakenings and meltings and new feelings. Along with a lot of messy puddles from the past just sitting there waiting to evaporate. Come hasten the arrival of spring with a brand new live edition of the sensational talk show and podcast that at least one person said was “the funniest show I’ve seen in 20 years of downtown comedy”. That’s something!

We are thrilled to return to the Slipper Room on the Lower East Side with an epic program that is sure to delight. Dale will begin the evening with a visit from noted researcher and photographer, Shannon Taggart. Shannon has spent more than 16 years devoted to understanding and documenting the world of mediums, conjuring, and seances in American Spiritualism. We’ll see what spirits are released as the two converse over a small table and some strong drinks. The evening continues to build on that conversation with comedians Hadiyah Robinson and Alex English along with writer Maggie Serota, Managing Editor of Death and Taxes. Plus electrifying music from theremin master, Cornelius Loy! We hope you can join us, in the DEEP NIGHT!

Marching Through San Francisco

Oh, friends! Here we are back from the wild days of marches and rain and comedy that was our recent trip to San Francisco. We went out there to the City by the Bay, for Dale’s fourth electrifying appearance at SF Sketchfest. I always enjoy going out to the Festival and it was fantastic that so many folks made it out to our show, even though it happened at exactly the same time as the giant protest happening downtown and around the world. We had a really fun evening in the Deep Night, welcoming guests Jenny Zigrino (pictured with Dale above), Allie Goertz, and Phil Ross. Phil showed off some of his future fungus that is going to be what everyone is wearing, building houses out of, and generally clamoring for as time goes on. If you want to hear the audio from that night – crazy mic pops and all – you can do that here on the Deep Night site: http://www.daleradio.com/2017/01/26/dn9-sfsketchfest/.

San Francisco looked good, if damp. And I got to run into a lot of fun people and comedy heroes in the elevator. That’s the main reason I go anymore. Just to see Ron Funches in the hotel lobby is enough to make my day. Look for some more live shows back in NY – now that we’re settled in again and who knows – maybe more exciting things on the horizon. Just trying to make it through the daily announcements from the news and general life stuff at the moment.

Like a Tumbleweed

As we prepare for Winter travels and holiday tidings, I find myself thinking about this fine tumbleweed I spotted in downtown Laramie, Wyoming. I was there on business not long ago, and after a dinner alone (of raw Prime Rib, and garlicky mashed potatoes capped off with something called Eggnog Pie) I decided to wander around the little downtown area. I was told about a footbridge there that you could climb up to and watch the long cross country freight trains as they rattle by underneath. A long locomotive pulled up just as I approached the bridge, so I clamored up to the top and watched as car after car after car rumbled along. I was the only person there – at times it felt like I was the only person in Laramie, and it was bitterly cold. Too cold for my fancy sneakers that I ordered from Paris, because we got a pair there once years ago. I took note of the shoe store downtown so that I could come back the next day and look for boots. But there, freezing, underneath yet another super moon, it was hypnotic and calming to watch those cars go by. I walked to the end and back, despite the cold, then returned to my car. As I got to the block where the car was parked, I found this little tumbleweed. Beautifully lit beneath the street lamps. I thought about trying to bring it home, but that’s an awkward way to make friends on a four hour flight. I let it be, since it probably had somewhere to go. And I walked back to my rental car and returned to my room at the hotel, which was marked by a plaque that read. “Grizzly Room.” In the lobby all the taxidermied bears and deer and elk had little Santa hats on and the empty hall echoed with the sounds of Santa Baby. I thought about the few of us that were staying there. Passing through like that tumbleweed. but confined to these strange sad places. The next day I ate lunch at Arby’s, which is always better in theory than in reality. Except for curly fries. All fries should be curly fries. I stopped in to see some dinosaur bones at the Geology Museum and then went to the tiny airport to fly home. There’s always something affirming about the wide open West, even now. But I was happy to get back to New York and the mess of Laguardia, and this place where you’re never alone. Warmest holiday wishes to all, no matter where you are. Here’s hoping we find good places to land in 2017.
