Deep Night Takes on Late Night in NYC!

Dale is thrilled to discuss the legacy of late night television and the artful role of host with three terrific guests who explore this topic (among other things) in their work. Dale welcomes critic and New York Times columnist, Jason Zinoman to talk about his new, essential book, Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night. Then the conversation will expand to include two contemporary hosts, comedians Maeve Higgins and Ike Ufomadu. Maeve of course hosts the popular podcast, Maeve in America and is a frequent all star guest/co-host on Star Talk, along with Eugene Mirman and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Ike Ufomadu is a stand up and comedic performer who has taken on the form of late night talk show and reinvented it, retooled it, deconstructed it, and put it back together again. He’s an artist in residence at Joe’s Pub along with some other terrific Deep Night alumni, and Dale is eager to hear his take on the influence of these folks behind the desks.
We’ll be joined once again by the delightful Cornelius Loy on theremin and perhaps Dale will work his conjuring magic to summon forth an additional guest! Or maybe he’ll just practice some crystal therapy on the guy who always sits in the front row! Either way, it will be a wonderful show and we hope to see you there.

Oh and a special thanks to the very gifted Candice Broersma for her illustration of Dale and his mystical pigeon on the newest poster series. Check out her work and have her draw everything. She’s terrific.

Parents Arts Night at Jalopy Featuring Dale!

Dale’s by no means the star of the show at the upcoming Parents Arts Night at Jalopy in Brooklyn. But he might be a reason to go. I know I love it, because it’s a chance to perform alongside some talented parents while also raising a little scratch for the fine educational programs at PS29. The school has been terrific and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t super excited to do this show. Just seeing the hidden talents of the other parents is gift enough. It would be great to see you as well. Some of you may know that I do voice overs, and recently I walked in for a paired audition and who was there? Another parent! We have the same agent. Which I guess is not so weird, but it felt pretty weird. And our paired audition in a tiny tiny recording box was also pretty effing weird. But, there it is, people have talents. So why not come out, enjoy some music, comedy, and whatever else people have going on when not chasing kids around the playground, or sitting quietly in the hall during parent teacher conferences. (You can also just make a donation if you prefer to do that. I won’t tell or post about it ever.)

CONJURING ANOTHER DEEP NIGHT IN NYC 3/22

Oh, friends and fiends. This is the time of year of awakenings and meltings and new feelings. Along with a lot of messy puddles from the past just sitting there waiting to evaporate. Come hasten the arrival of spring with a brand new live edition of the sensational talk show and podcast that at least one person said was “the funniest show I’ve seen in 20 years of downtown comedy”. That’s something!

We are thrilled to return to the Slipper Room on the Lower East Side with an epic program that is sure to delight. Dale will begin the evening with a visit from noted researcher and photographer, Shannon Taggart. Shannon has spent more than 16 years devoted to understanding and documenting the world of mediums, conjuring, and seances in American Spiritualism. We’ll see what spirits are released as the two converse over a small table and some strong drinks. The evening continues to build on that conversation with comedians Hadiyah Robinson and Alex English along with writer Maggie Serota, Managing Editor of Death and Taxes. Plus electrifying music from theremin master, Cornelius Loy! We hope you can join us, in the DEEP NIGHT!

Marching Through San Francisco

Oh, friends! Here we are back from the wild days of marches and rain and comedy that was our recent trip to San Francisco. We went out there to the City by the Bay, for Dale’s fourth electrifying appearance at SF Sketchfest. I always enjoy going out to the Festival and it was fantastic that so many folks made it out to our show, even though it happened at exactly the same time as the giant protest happening downtown and around the world. We had a really fun evening in the Deep Night, welcoming guests Jenny Zigrino (pictured with Dale above), Allie Goertz, and Phil Ross. Phil showed off some of his future fungus that is going to be what everyone is wearing, building houses out of, and generally clamoring for as time goes on. If you want to hear the audio from that night – crazy mic pops and all – you can do that here on the Deep Night site: http://www.daleradio.com/2017/01/26/dn9-sfsketchfest/.

San Francisco looked good, if damp. And I got to run into a lot of fun people and comedy heroes in the elevator. That’s the main reason I go anymore. Just to see Ron Funches in the hotel lobby is enough to make my day. Look for some more live shows back in NY – now that we’re settled in again and who knows – maybe more exciting things on the horizon. Just trying to make it through the daily announcements from the news and general life stuff at the moment.

Like a Tumbleweed

As we prepare for Winter travels and holiday tidings, I find myself thinking about this fine tumbleweed I spotted in downtown Laramie, Wyoming. I was there on business not long ago, and after a dinner alone (of raw Prime Rib, and garlicky mashed potatoes capped off with something called Eggnog Pie) I decided to wander around the little downtown area. I was told about a footbridge there that you could climb up to and watch the long cross country freight trains as they rattle by underneath. A long locomotive pulled up just as I approached the bridge, so I clamored up to the top and watched as car after car after car rumbled along. I was the only person there – at times it felt like I was the only person in Laramie, and it was bitterly cold. Too cold for my fancy sneakers that I ordered from Paris, because we got a pair there once years ago. I took note of the shoe store downtown so that I could come back the next day and look for boots. But there, freezing, underneath yet another super moon, it was hypnotic and calming to watch those cars go by. I walked to the end and back, despite the cold, then returned to my car. As I got to the block where the car was parked, I found this little tumbleweed. Beautifully lit beneath the street lamps. I thought about trying to bring it home, but that’s an awkward way to make friends on a four hour flight. I let it be, since it probably had somewhere to go. And I walked back to my rental car and returned to my room at the hotel, which was marked by a plaque that read. “Grizzly Room.” In the lobby all the taxidermied bears and deer and elk had little Santa hats on and the empty hall echoed with the sounds of Santa Baby. I thought about the few of us that were staying there. Passing through like that tumbleweed. but confined to these strange sad places. The next day I ate lunch at Arby’s, which is always better in theory than in reality. Except for curly fries. All fries should be curly fries. I stopped in to see some dinosaur bones at the Geology Museum and then went to the tiny airport to fly home. There’s always something affirming about the wide open West, even now. But I was happy to get back to New York and the mess of Laguardia, and this place where you’re never alone. Warmest holiday wishes to all, no matter where you are. Here’s hoping we find good places to land in 2017.

Bedtime Stories With Casper Mattresses!

I’ve been asked to share a little bed-related story for the good folks at Casper Mattresses, during an event at a pop-up shop in NYC. If you’re free and would like to attend, the info is below. I’ll be sharing the bill with some of my favorite storytelling comedy folks, including Giulia Rozzi, Dion Flynn, and Chris Pappas, hosted by the great Brad Lawrence. It’s Weds, December 7th, 7:30pm at 106 Spring Street in SoHo. I SOHOpe you can make it. You can RSVP here https://bedtimestories1207.splashthat.com/. This is a picture of me on a Casper mattress.
