If you want to come out and see Dale – the Super Fun Superfund Variety Show is a great way to get him in a small dose. Saturday, April 21! And later that week is another taping of the show at Film Biz Recycling. I’ll actually be appearing as myself this summer, but more details on that soon. Don’t want to spoil the excitement just yet.
If you’d like to hear from Strindberg and Helium on twitter, the way to do it is to follow @miseryyyy. Just settling in for a nice mosquito season over here by the canal. The air conditioner probably goes on tomorrow.

Dale Seever brings his magical podcast to the Hammer for a live recording session on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Many an aspiring chitchatter has reached for podcasting glory in the last few years. The locations they hail from are as plentiful as stars on a map; the topics they cover could fill a phone book. (We wouldn’t be surprised if there’s actually a podcast devoted strictly to phone books, in fact.)

But few podcasters win that prized cult following, and fewer still can attract the offbeat and interesting guests that inspire a prized cult following. Dale Seever – aka James Bewley- is that cult-following-inspiring podcaster. His lively shows can cover subjects like “holiday nog” and “quality ’70s menswear” and “time travel” and “fame” and “burritos,” just to cherry-pick from his site. In short? Whatever the gamut is, Dale Seever laughs at it and runs, with mirth, past its borders.

Now he’s bringing his Dale Radio Live! show to the Hammer Museum on Thursday, Jan. 19. There will be guests, including Mary Lou Metzger of “Lawrence Welk” fame. And “onstage mixology.” And tunes from the UCLA Jazz Ensemble. Gamut? Prepare to tested, and then broken.

It’s a free show, so people who like free shows, podcasts, sassy banter, and facial hair will surely be in attendance. Mr. Seever is quite the hirsute gentleman, a plus in our books.

Time is 7 p.m. Park beneath the Hammer for three bucks after 6 p.m.

Inspired, podcasters? Want, someday, to put on your own show at a big museum? Beards, onstage mixology, and burrito talk are all obviously key. But so is having a really solid show.

Clark Kent has a famous alter ego with the power of flight, superhuman strength and X-ray vision. James Bewley’s alter ego, Dale, simply has a propensity for cheap teal business suits and whiskey in all of its forms.

Cult podcast “Dale Radio” chronicles Dale Seever’s idealistic adventures through life. A live taping of “Dale Radio Live!” featuring Kenny Burrell and the UCLA Jazz Ensemble will be performed at the Hammer Museum Thursday evening, with guests including artist Marc Horowitz and Mary Lou Metzger of the “Lawrence Welk Show.” Daily Bruin’s Phillip Horlings spoke to Bewley about eating pie on the radio and why a live mixologist beats a DJ any day of the week.

Daily Bruin: Tell us how you created Dale. What is he like?
James Bewley: I was a part of a sketch comedy group. This character was developed there as part of a cabaret night. I had a collaborator who would play my wife and we would sing inappropriate duets … talk about the problems of our marriage, etc. She had gone off to nursing school and we weren’t performing as a couple anymore, so I made it that the stage marriage had dissolved and Dale was somebody that was on his own now trying to make a go of it.
Dale is very comfortable talking about his issues onstage. … I try to make it that he isn’t somebody (who) goes negative. Even though things may annoy me, James, he takes those things and tries to find the positive … like subway smells or the Gowanus Canal as being a source of inspiration. … There is more comedy in trying to like something as opposed to disliking something.

DB: How did you decide to pursue the “Dale” character in podcast form?
JB: It was as simple as being able to buy a microphone. The first one I used was a headset … for a Playstation. I realized I could record into my laptop with it. So I poured myself a scotch and I just started talking as this character for a little 20-minute set, and just put it out there.

DB: What different forms of “Dale Radio” have you done over the years?
JB: I do a mix of just Dale, Dale talking to people in their studios and apartments and the live shows. I’ve been doing those since early 2011. I’ve had people that are liquor experts, people that were on SNL, people that are great pie makers in Brooklyn. We’ve had a good mix of Dale eating pie on the radio, which makes a fantastic podcast experience.

DB: Where do you generally perform your live shows?
JB: Most shows I’ve been doing at a place that was a former public bathhouse along the Gowanus Canal called the Brooklyn Lyceum. … It’s a little bit run down, it’s a place that’s emerging as a cultural center … and it seems like a place that Dale would perform. I’m very happy to be there.

DB: The Hammer Museum is a larger venue, but you have a lot of people participating.
JB: Yeah, I’m pretty sure that they don’t really have a solid idea of what’s in for them. I don’t know what their take on this is, but I’m just happy that everyone can be involved – including the UCLA Jazz Ensemble and Kenny Burrell. That is mind-blowing that they are going to be playing my theme song. … And my dear friend Daniel is going to be up there, mixing some drinks on stage. Some people have felt that I should have a live DJ, but he’s going to be making drinks. I like to pair each show with a particular scotch, or whiskey, or some sort of enjoyable drink.

DB: What can a UCLA student expect from going to your show?
JB: You are going to see people that are making entertainment possible … in a variety of different ways. Marc Horowitz is doing films and commercial projects, using the Internet to create his work. From a completely different perspective, Mary Lou has been in the game a long time but is still making things happen. And (there’s) me, who is in the mix, somewhere, just trying to be entertaining.

People discover Dale in the most peculiar ways. I recently sat down with Kim Chakanetsa a graduate student at Columbia University, who sent me a lovely note asking for an interview about the future of radio. In her research she had stumbled across Dale Radio and got sucked into the allure of micro-broadcasting from the foul banks of the Gowanus. She put together this piece for her class and was kind enough to send me a copy. I thought I’d post here so that I can close my eyes, imagine a light drizzle, and pretend that I’m actually on the BBC.

Hope you enjoy this short interview: FUTURE OF RADIO (AUDIO).

Dale’s steppin’ out! Now that we’re hitting the big time, we’ve decided to give ole Dale his own digital home, now located at www.daleradio.com.

This means that you may have to update your itunes feed to the new one – or it may automatically update, (Dale can’t make heads or tails out of html) so check here for the new stuff and we promise not to move that ever again.

This also means that this site will revert to infrequent posts about my life, while my alter egos are free to run amok elsewhere. Thanks for supporting Dale and making him…whatever he is. There’s lots of exciting/ridiculous borderline unbelievable stuff happening with Dale coming up soon – so be sure and stay tuned to Dale Radio. I’m going to try to get back into the habit of talking in the first person and go eat a bacon maple donut as the clouds roll over Portland.

I was first introduced to the work of multi-faceted Canadian artist, Shary Boyle, while at the Hammer Museum, during the run of Masters of American Comics in 2006. Sammy Harkham, the mastermind behind the outrageously awesome comics compendium, Kramer’s Ergot, suggested that we should close out an evening celebrating the artists of Ergot, with one of Shary’s infamous “light shows”. People who know me know that I’m always up for a good light show, so I said yes. We rented an overhead projector with plenty of extra bulbs, and flew Shary down from Toronto. Her performance that night, as a reflective diamond covered elf-wolf remains among my top experiences in a darkened room of all time.

Organized by Louise Dery, curator at the Galerie de l’Université du Québec à Montréal, Shary is being given an excellent survey exhibition, Shary Boyle: Flesh and Blood that’s going to tour Canada, and I’m participating in a way that I probably can’t say just yet – but come the end of the year, I’ll post some details.

Safe to say, if you’re anywhere near Toronto in mid-September, please go see this show. It’s opening at the Art Gallery of Ontario September 15th, then traveling to Montreal and Vancouver. For more on Shary, visit her website. You’ll be glad you did.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost ten years since we recorded the original episodes of Strindberg and Helium. In that time, the morose Swedish playwright and his little pink pal have toured the world, appearing in numerous film festivals; been subjects of articles in the New York Times, USA Today, and Entertainment Weekly; and even featured in a song by Amanda Palmer.

That so many people have written to us over the years, whether begging for more, or discovering the videos for the first time, never ceases to amaze and delight. So, for every Halloween costume that prompted exceedingly long explanations, for every homemade Helium cake and hand-knitted doll, and especially for that month in 2003 when your co-worked repeated something you said in a high pitched voice at every meeting, you have my deepest thanks. It is with great pleasure that I present you with our newest episode. Strindberg and Helium: At the Beach. Written by Erin Bradley Perkins and animated by the one and only, Eun-ha Paek.

See? We told you we’d make more. Hang in there for our next launch party. To be held in 2020. Enjoy.

On July 20, 2010, at the KGB Bar in NYC, Dale was called into hosting duties by friend and poet, Pamela A. Russell, author of the very funny poetry collection, B is for Bad Poetry.

Dale changed into his new summer weight polyester and took to the world’s smallest podium to introduce and interview each poet. Along with Pam Russell, Dale spent some time with Jennifer L. Knox, Melissa Broder, Patrick Costigan and the Aussie, Max Sharam. The latter of whom Dale paid the ultimate compliment, “I bet you defecate like a unicorn!” Still a tough line to beat.

And though not everyone listed the host for the evening, kudos to Time Out for giving Dale a little ink. Very little.

Friend of the program, Pamela A. Russell wrote to Dale asking if he would don his trusty hosting suit and join her in presenting An Evening of Humorous Verse at the New York City hotspot, the KGB Bar.

Dale agreed long before it suddenly became fashionable to be affiliated with the KGB! Dale and his fans have always been ahead of the curve. Or are they spies?! (Ask them how they keep their hydrangeas looking so fresh!) The only way to tell for sure is to come down to the KGB Bar, Tuesday July 20th at 7pm and catch everyone in the act.

Pamela will read from her latest literary sensation, B is for Bad Poetry. Joining her are fellow writers Jennifer L. Knox, Melissa Broder, Max Sharam, and Patrick Costigan. 85 East 4th Street, 2nd FL, near 2nd Ave, NY, NY. Bring yer own poems if ya got em!

In collaboration with George Nachtrieb, founder of this masterwork of a website (YDIndustries.com), detailing the products and services of a fictitious mega-corporation. I suggested we start doing live events and allow people to peek inside the successful walls of this multi-national conglomerate. Inventing the persona of Dean Kramer to George’s Steve Musselman, I co-wrote and performed informative podcasts, generated the biting commentary in the company blog, acted and co-created powerpoint presentations for live Success! Seminars, and aided in the production of video shorts including the one below featuring the calls of the Mastodon. Among the things I am most proud of: developing the savory flavors of Condom Burst! Now available in Garlic Nan!
