Folks, happy to announce that the erstwhile, Mr. Seever, my daring alter ego – is headed back to Los Angeles, the land of his lost years. Dale will host a free, one-night only, live taping of the popular podcast, Dale Radio at the Hammer Museum, on Thursday, January 19, at 7pm. Parking available under the Museum for a modest sum. Really hope you can make it or spread the word! Guests include Marc Horowitz, Daniel Lee, and the amazing Mary Lou Metzger, star of the Lawrence Welk Show!! A dream come true! Summer Days, Drifting Away

Summer highlights: A week in Brigantine watching Vera run for the “wa-wa” (the water, not the hoagie specialists); celebrating my dad’s 65th birthday party; celebrating my uncle’s 60th birthday party; a fantastic time in San Francisco for the Warhol Convening; being named an Emerging Leader of New York Arts Fellow; and launching the first-ever Dale Radio Superfund Pledge Drive on Kickstarter. Can’t wait for Fall to get here so I can stop sweating.

I won’t go on and on about her, (she’s probably embarrassed enough that I put the Crab Cooker photo up) but on the eve of a big transition I just want to say, thank you.

The Future of Radio Is Me

People discover Dale in the most peculiar ways. I recently sat down with Kim Chakanetsa a graduate student at Columbia University, who sent me a lovely note asking for an interview about the future of radio. In her research she had stumbled across Dale Radio and got sucked into the allure of micro-broadcasting from the foul banks of the Gowanus. She put together this piece for her class and was kind enough to send me a copy. I thought I’d post here so that I can close my eyes, imagine a light drizzle, and pretend that I’m actually on the BBC.

Is Dale the future of radio? I dunno, but an upcoming interview may provide some insights! He’s sure been busy over at DaleRadio.com – and in person, steaming up the windows of the World Famous Brooklyn Lyceum. Thanks to the entire crew over there for making Dale Radio Live! such a success on Feb. 12.

It was a strange and wonderful honor to have Strindberg and Helium named one of the Top 25 Creative Videos in the first ever, Guggenheim/YouTube Play Biennial. You can even watch some of the festivities from the awards night on the YouTube Play channel. (For Bewl seekers, I’m in the first section – then I mostly am walking up and down the ramps trying to not to slip.)It was a lot of time spent in the basement of the world renowned museum, but we all were given giant gold-painted ceramic bricks and got to stand behind Michael Showalter. My hearty congratulations to all the winners, and especially to my dear friends, the dynamic engine of Strindberg and Helium, Erin and Eun-Ha.

Making the Shortlist

A nice bit of news this week. Strindberg and Helium’s latest episode was selected as one of 125, from an international pool of 23,000 submissions, to be part of the shortlist for the first ever, Guggenheim/YouTube Play Biennial. Kind of amazing that this duo just keeps on keepin on! This is a fine acknowledgment of the awesome work done by Eun-Ha Paek and Erin Perkins. I’m so glad to know those creative ladies, and to be a part of this endeavor. For a link to all the shortlisted videos click here.

Dale’s steppin’ out! Now that we’re hitting the big time, we’ve decided to give ole Dale his own digital home, now located at www.daleradio.com.

This means that you may have to update your itunes feed to the new one – or it may automatically update, (Dale can’t make heads or tails out of html) so check here for the new stuff and we promise not to move that ever again.

This also means that this site will revert to infrequent posts about my life, while my alter egos are free to run amok elsewhere. Thanks for supporting Dale and making him…whatever he is. There’s lots of exciting/ridiculous borderline unbelievable stuff happening with Dale coming up soon – so be sure and stay tuned to Dale Radio. I’m going to try to get back into the habit of talking in the first person and go eat a bacon maple donut as the clouds roll over Portland.

The Wonder of Shary Boyle

I was first introduced to the work of multi-faceted Canadian artist, Shary Boyle, while at the Hammer Museum, during the run of Masters of American Comics in 2006. Sammy Harkham, the mastermind behind the outrageously awesome comics compendium, Kramer’s Ergot, suggested that we should close out an evening celebrating the artists of Ergot, with one of Shary’s infamous “light shows”. People who know me know that I’m always up for a good light show, so I said yes. We rented an overhead projector with plenty of extra bulbs, and flew Shary down from Toronto. Her performance that night, as a reflective diamond covered elf-wolf remains among my top experiences in a darkened room of all time.

Organized by Louise Dery, curator at the Galerie de l’Université du Québec à Montréal, Shary is being given an excellent survey exhibition, Shary Boyle: Flesh and Blood that’s going to tour Canada, and I’m participating in a way that I probably can’t say just yet – but come the end of the year, I’ll post some details.

Safe to say, if you’re anywhere near Toronto in mid-September, please go see this show. It’s opening at the Art Gallery of Ontario September 15th, then traveling to Montreal and Vancouver. For more on Shary, visit her website. You’ll be glad you did.

Your Miseryyyy is Over

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost ten years since we recorded the original episodes of Strindberg and Helium. In that time, the morose Swedish playwright and his little pink pal have toured the world, appearing in numerous film festivals; been subjects of articles in the New York Times, USA Today, and Entertainment Weekly; and even featured in a song by Amanda Palmer.

That so many people have written to us over the years, whether begging for more, or discovering the videos for the first time, never ceases to amaze and delight. So, for every Halloween costume that prompted exceedingly long explanations, for every homemade Helium cake and hand-knitted doll, and especially for that month in 2003 when your co-worked repeated something you said in a high pitched voice at every meeting, you have my deepest thanks. It is with great pleasure that I present you with our newest episode. Strindberg and Helium: At the Beach. Written by Erin Bradley Perkins and animated by the one and only, Eun-ha Paek.

See? We told you we’d make more. Hang in there for our next launch party. To be held in 2020. Enjoy.

Friend of the program, Pamela A. Russell wrote to Dale asking if he would don his trusty hosting suit and join her in presenting An Evening of Humorous Verse at the New York City hotspot, the KGB Bar.

Dale agreed long before it suddenly became fashionable to be affiliated with the KGB! Dale and his fans have always been ahead of the curve. Or are they spies?! (Ask them how they keep their hydrangeas looking so fresh!) The only way to tell for sure is to come down to the KGB Bar, Tuesday July 20th at 7pm and catch everyone in the act.
